A handmade crochet toy that has been well cared for does not just last a season. It lasts long enough to be handed down. That is the whole point of buying something made by hand.

Most parents find that out the hard way. A beloved amigurumi goes into the washing machine on a warm cycle and comes out a different shape entirely. The belly sags. The ears droop sideways. The filling has clumped into one corner. It still gets cuddled, but it is never quite the same.

It does not have to go that way. Handmade crochet toys made from quality cotton and acrylic yarns are genuinely durable, but they need a little more thought than a quick machine wash. Once you know the steps, keeping them looking good is not much effort at all.

Before You Wash Anything, Check the Yarn

The two most common yarn types used in quality handmade crochet toys are cotton and soft acrylic blends. Both handle gentle hand washing well. Cotton is slightly more forgiving with temperature. Acrylic can stretch if handled roughly when wet.

If your toy came with a care card, read it first. At The Wishlist Store, each piece ships with yarn-specific notes. If you have lost the card or received the toy as a gift, the safest rule is always hand wash cold, never machine wash, never tumble dry.

Quick check before washing: Run your fingers along the seams and any attached details like eyes, noses or decorative stitching. If anything feels loose, hand stitch it back before washing. Water will finish off a loose eye faster than any amount of play.

How to Wash a Handmade Crochet Toy

The steps below work for the full range of handmade crochet toys including soft dolls, amigurumi animals, rattles and cot hangings. Follow them in order and the toy will come out clean without losing its shape.

Step 01

Spot clean first

For small marks and everyday mess, dampen a soft cloth with cool water and a drop of mild baby soap. Dab the area gently, do not rub. Blot dry with a clean towel. This handles most situations without a full wash.

Step 02

Fill a basin with lukewarm water

Use cool to lukewarm water only. Add a small amount of wool-friendly wash such as Eucalan or a gentle baby detergent. No-rinse formulas work well as they leave no soapy film in the filling.

Step 03

Submerge and swish gently

Place the toy in the water and move it gently for a few minutes. For heavier soiling, let it soak for up to 15 minutes. Do not scrub, twist or wring at any point during this step.

Step 04

Rinse until the water runs clear

Drain the soapy water and refill with clean cool water. Swish again until no soap remains. Leftover detergent in the filling can cause irritation for babies and attracts dirt faster once dry.

Step 05

Press out water with a towel

Lay the toy on a dry towel, roll them together and press firmly. Do not wring or twist. Repeat with a fresh dry towel until most of the water has been absorbed.

Step 06

Reshape and dry flat

While still damp, reshape the toy by hand. Flatten limbs, round out the body, straighten ears. Lay flat on a clean dry towel away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Allow 24 to 48 hours to dry fully.

Drying Takes Longer Than You Think

This is where most people rush and regret it. A crochet toy that looks dry on the outside can still have damp filling inside, especially in thicker pieces like the Giraffe Rattle and Toy Set or larger dolls like Bella the Doll. Press firmly into the body after 24 hours. If it feels cool or damp in the centre, it needs more time.

Damp filling left too long develops mould. It is not visible at first, but eventually shows as discolouration and an unpleasant smell. If you have a fan, point it at the toy to speed up the drying process. A drying rack works better than a flat surface because air can circulate underneath.

Keep drying toys well away from direct sun. It fades cotton yarn quickly and the soft colours that make pieces like the Dreamy Sheep Cot Hanging or the Under the Ocean Cot Hanging so appealing will wash out faster than you expect.

Caring for Cot Hangings and Nursery Mobiles

Cot hangings are a slightly different case. The individual crochet pieces can be spot cleaned or carefully hand washed, but the hanging structure itself with its cord and attachment points should not be submerged. For most routine maintenance, spot cleaning the individual animals or shapes is enough.

If a full wash is needed, remove the crochet pieces from the hanging structure where possible, wash them individually following the steps above, and reattach once fully dry. The Dreamy Sheep Cot Hanging and Under the Ocean Cot Hanging are both constructed to allow this without damage to the overall piece.

Long Term Storage

When a toy is being stored for any length of time, a few small steps protect it from the things that cause real damage: moisture, moths and dust.

Storage checklist: Make sure the toy is completely dry before storing. Place it in a breathable cotton bag or clean pillowcase rather than a sealed plastic bin. Add a cedar block or lavender sachet to deter moths naturally. Store in a cool, dry spot such as a bedroom shelf or wardrobe. Avoid attics, basements or any space with temperature swings.

Plastic containers seal in any remaining moisture and create the conditions mould needs. Breathable fabric storage lets air move through while keeping dust off. A toy stored this way for years will come out looking close to how it went in.

Keyrings and Bag Charms

Crochet keyrings travel harder than any other piece in the collection. They live on the outside of bags, hit the ground regularly, pick up grease from hands and grime from surfaces. Spot cleaning with a damp cloth handles most of what they go through. For a deeper clean, the same hand wash method applies but these small pieces dry quickly, usually within a few hours.

The Bunny with Carrot Keychain, Little Duckling Keychain and Mini Pink Purple Doll Keychain are all made to be used daily, and a gentle clean every few weeks keeps them in good shape. Check the metal ring and clasp after washing and dry them separately with a cloth to prevent any rust marks on the yarn.

These Toys Are Made to Last

The whole reason to buy handmade is that it lasts. Factory toys are priced to be replaced. A well-made crochet toy from a skilled artisan is priced to be kept, washed carefully, handed to a younger sibling, and eventually passed on altogether.

Every piece from The Wishlist Store is made by artisans using quality yarn chosen for durability as much as softness. The care that goes into making them deserves a little care in return. Follow the steps above and the toy your child has today could still be in good shape a decade from now.
